    About Lofoten

Where Norway reveals its quiet self

Lofoten is a chain of islands above the Arctic Circle where mountains rise straight from the sea. Fishing villages remain quiet; light moves slowly across the water.

It is a destination for travellers who want landscape over schedule — wild beaches, midnight sun in summer, the northern lights in winter, and the sea as a constant horizon.

"Lofoten is the destination that makes people stop planning and start feeling. There is nowhere quite like it."

    Getting there

Direct flights to Leknes (LKN) or Svolvær (SVJ) from Oslo, Bergen and Bodø. NLC can arrange private charter direct to Lofoten from anywhere in Norway.

    Best time to visit

Lofoten rewards every season differently. Summer for midnight sun and hiking. Winter for northern lights, whale watching, and the raw drama of the Arctic sea.

    Who visits

Private families, honeymoon couples, photography enthusiasts, and travellers who want something entirely different from a conventional luxury holiday.

    Recommended duration

3–6 nights as a standalone destination, or combined with Tromsø or the Fjords for a comprehensive Norway journey.

    When to go

    Lofoten rewards every season

    ☀️

Midnight Sun — May to July

The sun never fully sets. Golden light at midnight, empty hiking trails, wildflowers on white-sand beaches. The ideal season for outdoor pursuits and photography.

Best for: Hiking · Photography · Fishing · Kayaking

    🌌

Northern Lights — Oct to Feb

The archipelago sits perfectly below the aurora oval. Dark skies, dramatic coastlines, and very few visitors. Combined with whale watching, this is the most immersive season.

Best for: Aurora · Whale watching · Dog-sledding · Solitude

    🎣

Fishing Season — Feb to April

The world's largest cod migration arrives in Lofoten waters. The villages come alive with the skrei season — a deeply cultural experience unique to these islands.

Best for: Deep-sea fishing · Local culture · Photography

    🍂

    Autumn — August to October

Quieter, wilder, and increasingly dramatic as the season turns. Early aurora, autumn colours on the hillsides, and the return of the sea eagles. An underrated time to visit.

Best for: Hiking · Wildlife · Landscape photography
